Job Description

IT’S A STATE OF MIND – You may already have it

Location – Various

STOP FOR NOTHING. Treacherous terrain. Extreme conditions. Unwelcoming coastlines. Enemy territory. Against the odds. None of it stands in their way. It can’t, because what makes them elite is getting the job done where others can’t. By land, by sea, by air. The Royal Marines.

RMA-The Royal Marines Charity serves the world’s finest elite fighting force, providing through life support to the very best and their families. We live by the Commando Mindset – understand, adapt, respond, overcome. The Commando Spirit and Values are our cornerstone and drive us

  • Commando Spirit:    Courage - Determination - Unselfishness - Cheerfulness.
  • Commando Values:  Excellence - Integrity - Self-Discipline - Humility

The Royal Marines Charity has recently merged with the Royal Marines Association, delivering one unified Corps charity, RMA-The Royal Marines Charity. This now provides a centralised, single organisation for through life support.

Since 2010 over £16m has been distributed by the Charity to the serving Corps, where public funding is not available. This increases the efficiency and effectiveness of the Corps and provides tangible benefits to the Defence of the Nation.

As we enter this new and exciting stage in the newly merged Charity’s development, we wish to appoint a new Chair. The current Chair will be standing down in June 2020, having completed his term of office and successfully taken the Charity through the merger process. We will be seeking an active and engaged Chair, who can provide the strategic leadership and guidance needed to help meet the vision, mission and future ambitious objectives of the Charity.

Do you have the right state of mind to join us on our journey?

Your mission

  • To lead the Board, being accountable for its performance and ensuring that Trustees are aware of and fulfil their duties within the laws needed for proper governance of the Charity.
  • To ensure the Board provides an appropriate strategy for the direction of the Charity.
  • To support and positively challenge (where appropriate) the CEO, ensuring the Board and executive staff work in genuine partnership.
  • To represent the Charity, both with external and internal partners across the breadth of the military and the wider community.
  • To engage with the Chairs of the other Naval service Charities to encourage collaboration and benefit to all of their beneficiaries.

Who are we looking for?

Potential candidates for this unique and exciting opportunity will be highly successful and proven business and commercially focused professionals with Chair and board experience from either the Commercial or Third sectors.

Whatever your background and experience, your personal qualities and empathy with the Commando Spirit and Values  will be critical to ensure success in such a high profile and valued position of responsibility.

You will understand and relate to the Commando mindset - first to understand, adapt, respond and overcome.

You will have excellent influencing and negotiating skills, aligned with clear examples where you have provided strategic leadership and related results. You will have the confidence and gravitas to represent the Charity both within and outside the military community and comfortable dealing with people at all levels of the corp. You must have an understanding and acceptance of the legal duties and an appreciation of the issues affecting the wider voluntary sector, including military charities

You will have an optimistic, proactive approach to the future development and growth of the Charity. This will be a tough challenge, but no role related to the Royal Marines will ever be easy!

IT’S A STATE OF MIND…...DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE IT?
